Higgins achieves Bronze award in The Defence Employer Recognition Scheme

Posted: 08/01/2020

Hot on the back of signing the Armed Forces Covenant in the summer, Higgins has been awarded the bronze award in The Defence Employer Recognition Scheme.

The scheme encourages employers to support the armed forces community and inspire others at to do the same as well as aligned with the covenant.

Amy Ross, Head of Social Value at Higgins comments, “We are thrilled to have been recognised for the bronze award so soon after signing the covenant. As a company we are actively working with a number of different organisations such as VETS and The Career Transition Partnership to actively promote the opportunities available within the construction industry to ex-service personnel and this award will help us further promote our commitment.”

The Employers Recognition Scheme is designed primarily to recognise private sector support although public sector organisations such as the emergency services, local authorities, NHS trusts and executive agencies are also eligible to be recognised.

Every year over 14,000 serving personnel leave the armed forces and there are approximately 120,000 unemployed military veterans of working age in Britain today. With an acute skills shortage in the construction industry, there are many opportunities for veterans to transfer their skills and embark on a career in the industry.
