Earn whilst you learn on a Management Training Programme

Posted: 29/05/2020

UK universities will have a very different feel at the start of the new academic year in September with social distancing measures in place, and many offering increased teaching online.

According to research from the University and College Admissions Service, 20% of students are also reconsidering plans to start university in the autumn, resulting in many students looking for other options in order to complete their higher education and gain the experience they need for their future career.

Leading contractor developer Higgins has been running its successful Management Training Programme for a number of years. It is open to school leavers who are interested in one of the many career options in the construction industry and built environment.

The Higgins Management Training Programme allows individuals to get a taste for a number of core disciplines throughout the company before deciding on a discipline to specialise in. Once enrolled on the programme, flexible rotations allow trainees to spend three to four months in four different departments before selecting one area of the business to pursue their career.

During term time trainees work a four day week, with the remaining day at an accredited university working towards a construction related BSc (Hons) degree. The programme fully funds the degree and allows individuals the opportunity to ‘earn whilst they learn’ without the burden of debt once the course has been completed.

Maisie joined the Higgins Management Training Programme in September 2019. She said, “I found out about the opportunity, through my Sixth Form where Higgins delivered a presentation about the programme and liked the fact there are a wide range of career paths within the construction industry. The rotation element of the programme helps you gain experience within all departments of the company giving you an idea in what you would like to continue working towards in the future.”

George also joined the programme in September 2019. He commented, “Through the programme so far I’ve been able to grow in confidence and overcome some challenges on a personal and professional level. To anyone looking to work in construction I would suggest taking a route like the one Higgins has on offer. It’s a great opportunity to earn as you learn and gain on the job knowledge to support your progression.”

Declan Higgins, Partnership Director at Higgins comments, “Our Management Training Programme offers a different route for school leavers interested in gaining further qualifications but through a more vocational pathway. We look forward to welcoming our latest intake in September and will be opening up the applications for September 2021 towards the end of the year.

“People are what makes our company a success and we believe in investing and developing from the foundations up to deliver skilled and experienced people at all levels of our business. Our percentage of long-service employees reflects our commitment to our people.”

Whilst at Higgins, each management trainee will also be enrolled in a mentor programme whereby a senior employee provides individuals guidance on their career at Higgins as well as assistance with their studies. Individuals will also earn a competitive salary and also benefit from performance based annual pay rises.

The Management Training roles on offer at Higgins include:

  • Construction Management
  • Commercial
  • After Sales
  • Estimating/Pre-Construction
  • Planning
  • New Business
  • Technical Coordination
  • Health and Safety
