To mark residents moving in, more than 350 tenants and leaseholders on the Colville Estate recently enjoyed a day of celebrations to mark the completion of phases 2A and 2B of regeneration works. The Speaker of Hackney Council, Councillor Kam Adams and representatives from Higgins were there joining in the fun and marking the occasion by cutting a ceremonial ribbon.
Residents enjoyed a variety of entertainment throughout the day, including fairground stalls, sumo wrestling, face painting and music and It was a great opportunity for them to meet each other over a tasty lunch of Turkish and Caribbean food.
The event was organised by Hackney Council, in partnership with contractor Higgins and developer Anthology.
Declan Higgins, Partnerships Director of Higgins said, “It was great to see so many people at the event celebrating our work. We are really proud of what we have achieved and have enjoyed working closely with both existing residents and Hackney Council to deliver much needed affordable housing. The regeneration has not only delivered new social rent homes but has provided the Hackney community with a number of training and employment opportunities.
“At Colville Estate we have proved that regeneration works best when you have the full engagement of residents who will ultimately form the community.”
Cllr Kam Adams, Speaker of Hackney, said at the event: “It gives me great pleasure to be here to mark the completion of this phase of regeneration as part of the ongoing transformation of the estate. I would like to thank both Higgins, our contractor, and Anthology for the excellent work they have done in the community and for contributing towards the wonderful event today.
“Between them, they have raised thousands of pounds for charity and provided jobs and training for local people in amongst numerous other community events.
“I’d also like to thank the Colville Estate Tenant and Resident Association for their work with the council during the regeneration of the estate, and residents for their patience - both of which are much appreciated!”
Sitting next to the Regent's Canal in Hoxton, Colville is one of Hackney's biggest building projects. Higgins was appointed by the Council to deliver phase 2a and 2b on the live council estate in close proximity of tenants as part of the extensive masterplan, which will eventually replace 432 of the original homes with over 900 high quality new homes, allowing all of Colville’s social rent tenants to move to a brand new Council home on the estate alongside much-needed additional new Council homes.
Designed by Karakusevic Carson Architects, Higgins has delivered 70 brand new social rent Council homes for existing residents who had been living in post War properties that were in a state of disrepair as well as six Shared Ownership homes, 129 sqm of commercial units and 40 private sale homes which has helped pay for the new social housing in the absence of any government funding.
