Higgins becomes silver member of Women into Construction

Posted: 07/10/2019

Leading contractor Higgins has become a silver member of Women into Construction. The organisation promotes gender equality in construction and provides bespoke support to women wishing to work in the industry. It also helps contractors with recruiting highly motivated, trained women that will help to reduce the skills gap and create a more gender-equal workforce.

As part of Higgins commitment the company will be offering work placements to women to enable access to opportunities and build up their experience, promote all vacancies with Women into Construction and organize community based awareness events to attract women into the sector.

In 2018, female workers accounted for 14 per cent of the total UK construction industry. Hayley joined Higgins when she was 18 and is now currently training to become a site manager.

Hayley comments, “I joined Higgins after applying for a temporary role as an administrator based on a project in Camden. I was really keen to stay with the company and interested in a career in site management, so I was really pleased to be offered a permanent role.

“I moved to King Square in Islington and was given the opportunity to study for site management whilst working alongside the team handling resident liaison. Higgins has been so supportive, mentoring me along the way and mapping out the different courses I should take. All my courses have been funded so I haven’t had to pay for any and I really feel like I have a career path in place.

“Higgins has given me lots of opportunity to learn on the job and I love being out on site and part of the team and I am being given more responsibility including snagging. Before joining, I wasn’t aware there were so many different jobs in the construction industry and so many opportunities for women, I would recommend it to anyone.”

Hayley is also part of Higgins Management Training Programme. The ‘Building Your Future’ programme has been created to identify young talent who want to work and develop careers within the Construction Industry and Built Environment. It allows individuals to get a taste for a number of core disciplines throughout the business before deciding on an area to specialise in.

During term times trainees work four days a week, with the remaining day spent at an industry accredited University, working towards a Construction related BSc (Hons) degree. The programme fully funds the degree and allows individuals the opportunity to ‘earn whilst they learn’ without the burden of debt once the course has been completed. Individuals will earn a competitive salary and also benefit from performance based annual pay rises.

If you would like more information or to enrol on the Higgins Management Training Programme for September 2020, applications will be reviewed from October 2019 to January 2020. Please send your CV to buildingyourfuture@higginsconstruction.co.uk.
