Colville Estate awarded prestigious RIBA London Award

Posted: 25/06/2019

Colville Estate in London Borough of Hackney has been awarded a prestigious RIBA London Award for architectural excellence.

The judges stated that “Colville Estate has one of the strongest neighbourhood spirits we have encountered in London. The masterplan has been characterised by engaging and working closely with a pro-active resident steering group.

“This is a bold, long-term approach to regenerating a neighbourhood, it takes carefully calculated risks and addresses the pressing issues of the need to build to higher densities in inner London and to support less advantaged communities to continue to live here. More interventions of this scale and ambition are needed for wider societal and economic sustainability.”

Sitting next to the Regent's Canal in Hoxton, Colville is one of Hackney's biggest building projects. Higgins was appointed by the Council to deliver phase 2a and 2b on the live council estate in close proximity of tenants as part of the extensive masterplan, which will eventually replace 432 of the original homes with over 900 high quality new homes, allowing all of Colville’s social rent tenants to move to a brand new Council home on the estate alongside much-needed additional new Council homes.

Designed by Karakusevic Carson Architects,Higgins has delivered 70  brand new social rent Council homes at Colville Estate for existing residents as well as 11 Shared Ownership homes, 129 sqm of commercial units  and 35 private sale homes which has helped pay for the new social housing in the absence of any government funding.

Steve Leakey, Managing Director of Higgins comments, “It is wonderful to see Colville Estate being recognised at the RIBA London Awards. These awards have championed and celebrated the best in architecture in the UK and around the world and I would like to thank all those involved for delivering an award winning project.”

The architects for  Phases 2A and 2B at Colville Estate were Karakusevic Carson Architects and for phase 3 Karakusevic Carson Architects with David Chipperfield Architects.
