Brickworks wins Highly Commended for Mixed Use at NLA Awards

Posted: 09/07/2019

Brickworks in the London Borough of Islington has won a Highly Commended for Mixed Use schemes at this year’s New London Architecture Awards.

Recognising the very best projects across 14 sectors of the built environment, the New London Awards seeks projects that contribute to make London a better place to live, work, move around and socialise.

Higgins was appointed by Islington Council to design and build the new community centre, known as Brickworks, along with 23 new social rent council homes at Ivy Hall. The community centre includes a café, meeting rooms, kitchens, a sports hall, children’s play spaces, a nursery, therapy rooms, offices for community organisations, a roof garden and music room.

It also boasts a special “Changing places” toilet, which provides additional facilities such as a hoist, a changing bench and a shower for people with profound and multiple disabilities, beyond those usually found in a standard accessible toilet.

The project was designed by Brady Mallalieu Architects through a series of community workshops with local residents and community groups. By re-using the footprint of the original car park, mature trees around the site were preserved, to be enjoyed from large balconies and corner windows, looking across the leafy estate.

Steve Leakey, Managing Director of Higgins comments, “Congratulations to everyone involved on at Ivy Hall and Brickworks. We are extremely proud to be part of this project which has created a real focal point for the whole community to enjoy and also delivered much needed council homes to the borough of Islington.”
