Companies join forces to help residents and students kick start their careers at the Hackney Careers Fair

Posted: 27/01/2017

Higgins Construction, Hackney Council and View Training are hosting a Careers Fair on Wednesday 1st February 2017 from 1pm to 4pm to help students and those looking to get back into work kick start their careers.

The Jobs Fair will take place at Hackney Community College where companies from the construction, security, administration, health and social care and retail sectors will come together to meet students, school leavers and those currently looking for a career change or seeking employment.

Jeff Joseph, Community Investment Manager for Higgins Construction said, “We are extremely committed to taking on local labour around our sites and one successful way of doing this is hosting career fairs. The fairs are ideal for those who are looking to embark on a career in a particular sector as they get the opportunity to speak directly with representatives from companies and prepare themselves for the world of work.

“We already have a number of success stories on our sites throughout the borough and look forward to helping more local residents embark on a new career.”

View Training is the private training provider which emerged from the established and successful business training arm of Hackney Community College. It has worked closely in partnership with Higgins Construction for many years on its sites in Hackney by supporting apprentices through the recruitment and progression on its apprenticeship programmes.

As part of its involvement in the Colville Estate regeneration, where Hackney Council is building hundreds of new homes for social rent, shared ownership and outright sale, Higgins Construction also recently hosted a series of workshops for out-of-work Colville residents.

Alongside Hackney Council’s ‘Ways into Work’ employment service, a number of residents were taken on to provide them with advice and support in becoming ‘job ready’. Based on their career interests, they have now been assigned a case worker to help them get free training and CV assistance before they attend the job fair in February.

Ways into Work is Hackney Council's employment service that specialises in helping train local people for placements in sustainable jobs.

Cllr Carole Williams, Hackney Council Cabinet Member for Employment, Skills and Human Resources, said: “In partnership with Higgins, Hackney Community College and View Training, the Job Fair will offer Hackney residents the valuable opportunity to find out more about careers in construction and to put their questions to employers. Construction is more than just bricks and mortar. There are huge variety of options including funded training, apprenticeships, and opportunities to progress skills that can be transferred into other careers. Whether you are interested in business admin, IT , facilities management or professional cookery, this fair will offer a chance to get quality guidance to help make informed career choices.”
