King Square Estate Phase 2, Islington

Following the successful delivery of phase one, we were appointed by London Borough of Islington to deliver phase two of this estate redevelopment which included new homes and estate improvement works in Bunhill, London.

Phase two of the redevelopment was designed by PTE Architects and included a total of 93 new homes in four new buildings, of which 47 properties were for social rent, four shared ownership and the rest were all private sale, which helped to fund the new affordable rent homes and the estate improvements.

A new community building was also delivered for King Square Tenant and Residents Association; a larger and upgraded community nursery at Rahere House; improvements to communal facilities such as bike and mobility scooter sheds and caretaker facilities in the existing blocks and enhanced landscaping to the estate including a new central square area and tree lined boulevard through the estate.

Young people from the local area also benefited through our apprenticeship programme run by our Social Value Team. Key outcomes included: 7 x trainees / apprentices, 1 x Management Trainee, 1 x RLO/Document Controller, 4 x work trails, 4 x work experience, 2 x into sustainable employment, 3 x Aspire Events, 1 x LSBU Event.

Cllr Diarmaid Ward, Islington Council’s executive member for housing and development, said: “Like the rest of London, Islington faces a massive shortage of genuinely affordable homes, and we’re committed to building more homes for social rent. This very significant scheme will build new council homes and also bring major improvements to King Square Estate. Higgins has committed to working with local people and keeping them up-to-date, and I’d like to thank local residents for their patience and understanding while the work takes place.”
