As the region's leading name in community construction, health & safety has to be a top priority for project teams and all the people in the communities affected by our work.

Safety first

Safety begins with training for our own teams, based on the national standards, the Health & Safety Executive legislations and in accordance with our company safety policy. To maintain high standards, all managers and members of staff undergo special regular health & safety courses.

On site

Just as safety has to be designed into every project by the architects, Higgins is responsible for ensuring the construction is planned and carried out with a full health & safety specification throughout the supply chain. This applies to every aspect of the work, down to the fine details of the materials that are specified and used, as well as the preparation of method statements to ensure safe systems of working.

In the community

Our resident liaison teams work closely with the communities to ensure our projects do not present a risk to their health and safety. This often involves the close co-operation of local police representatives, schools, colleges and of course, the residents. Safety is also promoted through special presentations and initiatives.

Our safety initiatives for children have involved the personal attention of our resident liaison team in schools. Prize competitions and fun events have been great to encourage pupils into appreciating our concern for their safety - to keep them on side and
off site.

Leading the industry

As well as conducting our own regular site checks, independent industry experts assess individual projects as regularly as every week for health & safety. We also provide both the Housing Forum and Building Research Establishment (BRE) with data to compare with the entire industry. From this ongoing review process, we know our performance has been ahead of the industry 'norm' since the beginning of this millennium.
